Joining the league as an expansion team for Season #2, Vienna was very competitive from the start. Lacking superstars and power hitting, Vienna has relied on consistent pitching and strong fundamental baseball.
Season #4 found Vienna with perhaps the best starting rotation in the league, featuring Franz Sussmayer, Peter Tchaikovsky, Carl Orf, Aaron Copland, and Antonio Vivaldi. The Canons lacked a strong bullpen and still had questionable offense, but they knew that as long as the pitchers kept it close, there was always a golden opportunity for a victory. The Canons did not disappoint, as they finished second in the Bumble Nut East, trailing Paris by only five games. As expected, their offense was what ultimately hurt them, while their pitching and defense kept things close. Sussmayer went on to win 20 games, while Orf tied for second in league ERA at 1.72. Orf (.166) and Copland (.169) finished third and fourth in opposition batting average, with only one starter (Don Knotts award winner Frederick Evans, .144) ahead of them. Frank Ravel finished fifth in the league in saves with 21.
Season #5 looks to be much of the same, as Vienna will continue to rely on their pitching. Vivaldi will move from the rotation to the bullpen and becomes the team’s closer, while Ravel will move into a set up role. Johann Bach returns as the Canons’ best hitter, with mid-season acquisition Thomas Mitchell looking forward to contributing for a full season in a Canon uniform. Mitchell came over in a trade that also brought catching prospect Jessica Ljung from the Washington D.C. Heroes. The players that were traded to D.C., Joseph Wagner and John Gotti, perished in the tragic mid-air collision that wiped out two entire franchises as they were on their way to the first ever Tokyo Goodwill Games.
