Led by Wyatt Earp, the Most Valuable Player of all three full seasons of the Bug Nut League, the Season #1 world champions have contributed mightily to the league’s rich tradition. Every season, Tombstone is a threat to win it all and has taken turns with Berkeley for supremacy of the Beetle Nut West division. Finishing in second place in Season #2, Tombstone reclaimed the top spot in Season #4, winning a club record 111 games before falling to eventual champion Paris.
Wyatt Earp has consistently been the best player in the league year in and year out, finishing season #4 with an amazing .415 batting average, becoming the first B-Nut player to break the .400 barrier. Earp also came very close to getting the Triple Crown, trailing the home run leader by only 1. While his defensive skills have declined each season after winning the gold glove at third base in season #1, Earp has shown that he can do anything on the offensive side from hitting for average and home runs to stealing bases. His low strikeout rate reflects his eagle eye and remarkable plate discipline. Johnny Cash burst onto the scene by hitting 50 doubles (second in league) and 52 home runs (third in league) and winning the gold glove behind the plate. Hong Kong Phooey won 21 games and Ben Thompson continued his solid career with 17 victories.
The Morticians head into Season #5 with much the same roster that won 111 games, with such superstars as Earp, Cash, and Phooey, as well as the solid and always dependable outfield trio of Jesse James, John Wesley Hardin and Turkey Creek Jack Johnson. Through the first ever Contraction Draft, Tombstone added the vastly talented Robert Crippen to the already deadly lineup. With his quick bat and spectacular defense, Crippen will replace talented but strikeout prone Buckskin Frank Leslie as the starting second baseman. As pitcher Ben Thompson nears retirement, Phil Coe is looking to continue his improvement and become the number 2 man behind Phooey in a strong starting staff. The relief corps has continued to develop top quality arms and with their depth will look to a closer by committee approach.
